what a week! - Bruce Guy and Myself presented at the WA Training Forum on Monday. We used today's meet as a back chat system and it worked well with 3-4 people actually posting and I am sure a few more lurkers.  Bruce and I took turns to amswer questions so giving people an E-learning experience during the presentation.

Guy has been up last week to show use how to use a tool for creating moving video of content- I did mine on the cosurse material and then talked over the top - it was speeded up x4 so I actually looked quit an artist - Clive my husband who is an artist would have laughed - I might get himt to do the nextone.
Now it is back to getting the course back on track and with the assignment 1 put in and marked I am looking forward to the LLN modules and creating more mini clips for the weekly materials.

Felt tired too early to go to be  -so what to do ? watch an economics talk by Rory Sutherland on  the computer !

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPENgRDsN_Q  if you have an hour to spare!

Actually it was surprisingly useful.
It was explaining how apart from a few entrepreneurs and business owners most of us seek to use defensive decision -making. That is if we can say an algorhythm or data shows that this is the way to choose we are happy. What we are not happy with is uncertainty!. That's why the new ways of having taxi apps will be come so popular- cos we know where the taxi is coming from. Certainly would work better for me if I am waiting for the RAC breakdown van to come. Knowing it was coming from a place  can envision rather then the usual it will be at least 45 minutes would be much more preferable.  Back to defensive decision making -  if we humans can find ways to off set someone blaming us then we will choose that.

I also learnt some new theories well old ones wrapped up with new language and powerpoint slides !
Loved the elephant and the rider for the subconscious  and rational thinking metaphor

Jonathan Haidt introduces the Elephant and the Rider metaphor.  Dan and Chip write:

“But to us, the duo’s tension is captured best by an analogy used by University of Virginia psychologist, Jonathan Haidt in his wonderful book The Happiness Hypothesis.  Haidt says that our emotional side is the Elephant and our rational side is the rider.  Perched atop the Elephant, the Rider holds the reins and seems to be the leader.  But the Rider’s control is precarious because the Rider is so small relative to the Elephant.  Anytime the six-ton Elephant and the Rider disagree about which direction to go, the Rider is going to lose.  He’s completely overmatched.”

I also liked the concept that on website have a 3rd option from register / subscribe or  not to - called continue - one that doesn't require use to fill in loads of personal data to just scan a price to menu. 96%of the people who would have left the site initially if asked for info when they pressed continue button were perfectly happy after they had bought or got information off the site complete the personal details form -by the way it made the company that first used it $3million- go figure- Now I have to go to sleep thinking about all that .

"Every now and then I come across a metaphor that really sticks and helps me think differently about something I see every day.

The metaphor helps me look at these situations with a new lens, and, as a result, think, feel, and act more effectively.

I’ve heard of several ways to think about our thinking.  I’ve heard of the left-brain and right-brain.  I’ve heard of the emotional side and the rational side.

This time, the metaphor is the Elephant and the Rider.  I especially like this metaphor because it paints a powerful picture of a little rider, either at the mercy of the elephant or directing the elephant to make great things happen.  The big take away here is that change can come easily when Elephants and Riders move together."

In the book, Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard , Dan Heath and Chip Heath write about the Elephant and the Rider.

learning how to present material for videoing

thanks to Guy the fun of creating a video that was then speeded up to look as though I was writing it was much easier then I thought. The 4x speed was just too much for me to talk against - however even that I treasine was easy to slow dosn and get a better response. I think I am getting the hang of this e- learning. Bruce Huy and myself are speaking at the Training Forum on 19th May on the approac Bpatistcare has taken to developing skills. It was a useful track back to the beginning to see the original takes we had on why we wanted to learn in feb 2014.

It's Easter Monday and I'm pleased to say that I have completed the TAEDES503 A assignment. Up loading was easy and I rather enjoyed the whole  process of thinking about why we create and design courses. Unpicking the various components was hard initially however using the ADDIE approach  reacquainted me.  I can see that the next LLN project will be equally of value. I Gunning Fogg indexed my assignment and found it was 13.5 good job Guy is above year 10 which is Gunning Fogg 12. For any one who want to check their articles for readability - I can recommend you use one of  these tools.

A different way of thinking about complicated issues

http://youtu.be/PU55Yrh03Jg

enjoy this link.

This week my attempts at getting the Moodle course to function have been limited. I spent time answering other emails to support the team efforts, and then ran out of steam to do too much with my own course.
I have a clearer understanding of the first quiz - however the answer for q10 still eludes me 2.5, 2.6 what eva!!
Other quizzes that have been put up are good to check out and I successful added a video you tube following Guys instructions.

E-learning experiences that link each other , and prepare for new roles

http://alltopstartups.com/2013/08/17/team-collaboration-apps/

come across this useful site with heaps of ideas on apps to use. I have spend time today on linked in , sorting out the various people I linked with at the Blended Learning conference last week.

Re E-learning course with SWIT I also spent time surfing sites for useful information for the team..I had a laugh at David in his fire uniform and couldn't help but add a quote about fires going out of control like rumours.  Note to self - must find a very funny photo.

In readiness for the State Senate election on 5th April I am a Polling station manager at Gooseberry Hill and a team leader at Shenton Park Hospital. I did some boring on line e- learning with text , some visual material on polling stuff and a MCQ for assessment.
The worst bit was when I clicked on a view to see an image the MCQ was reset back to zero , and I had to keep going in and out checking the images were still the same! I'll report that one at the F2F training. This is me going crazy at that GRRRRRRR.

I also cleaned out some space as I start with Curtin Study Centre for Dementia this week, so need space in my mind and in my office. Katrina sent a link via linked in to set up me on the project so that externally when people search for me they will find the project.

off to walk the dog now and recharge the batteries.

Equally good day at the Blended learning conference.
Reflections are: it's is worth considering the current direct and indirect delivery methods we currently use. Although the speakers have firm views and seem light years ahead, many of the audience were at similar stages to us, bandwidth issues, lack of buyin, interesting metaphor for that was lopes bandwidth too ! Elearning for induction was the go for most, yet needed to be significantly tailored for staff the gain. Blending learning options for LDPs that were well thought out seemed to be prevalent, maybe cos that is where companies invest. Heartening to know that a slower approach , well thought out with the L&D framework we have would stand us well, however end to end processing of learning into the business strategy to show ROI could be much improved.
Scaffolding was another term used for learner centric approaches that build confidence and competence.
Tools used today were todaysmeet , and twitter ,other options were offered.
Lots to think about and many photos to  review.
